Nail Cutting.
Thick, curved, painful or difficult toenails can be frustrating and uncomfortable — especially when they become impossible to manage safely at home. Our HCPC-registered Arnold podiatrists provide expert nail cutting and reduction for nails of all types, including the most severely thickened or distorted.
Using specialist podiatry-grade nippers and professional nail drills, we cut, reduce, shape, and smooth your nails safely and comfortably — often making a dramatic improvement in a single appointment.

Who Benefits Most
Who needs professional nail cutting?
Professional nail care is appropriate for anyone who finds nail cutting difficult, uncomfortable, or risky to do themselves — and for those whose nails have become too thick or distorted for standard clippers.
Elderly Patients
Reduced flexibility, dexterity, and eyesight make safe nail care increasingly difficult with age. We provide gentle, comfortable nail cutting for patients of all ages — including those who have not been able to manage their own nails for years.
Thick or Distorted Nails
Nails that have become thickened, hardened, curved or ram's-horn shaped (onychogryphosis) require specialist nail drills and nippers to reduce safely. Standard nail clippers simply cannot manage severely thickened nails.
Diabetic Patients
Diabetes affects circulation and nerve sensation — making DIY nail cutting a genuine risk. A nick or pressure point can develop into a serious wound. Regular professional nail care is an essential part of diabetic foot management.
Reduced Reach or Mobility
Back problems, arthritis, obesity, or recovery from surgery can make reaching the feet impossible. We provide a safe, professional alternative so your nails are always properly maintained.
Curved or Ingrown Edges
Nails that are curling, pinching, or beginning to grow into the surrounding skin need careful shaping and management to prevent a painful ingrown toenail developing.
Fungal or Discoloured Nails
Fungal nail infections cause nails to become thick, brittle, discoloured, and crumbly — making standard nail care extremely difficult. We reduce and tidy fungal nails safely, and can arrange a Fungal Nail Test if required.
Your Appointment
What happens during your nail cutting appointment?
Every appointment is thorough and tailored to your nails. We never rush.
Assessment
We examine all ten nails — checking thickness, shape, condition, skin around the nail, signs of infection, fungal changes, and any early ingrown edges. We also note any conditions (such as diabetes) that require additional care.
Nail Cutting
Using specialist podiatry-grade nail nippers — far more effective than standard clippers — we cut the nails to an appropriate length and shape. We cut straight across where appropriate to reduce the risk of ingrown nails.
Nail Reduction (if needed)
For thickened, hardened or ram's-horn nails, we use a professional electric nail drill with specialist burrs to carefully reduce and thin the nail to a safe, comfortable thickness. This is pain-free and immediately improves comfort in footwear.
Nail Edge Shaping
We carefully smooth and shape each nail edge using precision files and instruments to ensure no sharp or rough edges are left that could catch on socks, create pressure, or irritate the surrounding skin.
Skin Check
We inspect the skin around each nail for redness, soreness, swelling, early ingrown changes, or infection — addressing anything we find and advising you accordingly. We can also treat any corns, calluses, or hard skin in the same appointment.
Aftercare Advice
We advise on nail care between appointments, footwear recommendations, ideal cutting technique if appropriate, and the best interval for your next professional nail care appointment based on how quickly your nails grow.

FAQs
Nail Cutting — Your Questions Answered
For most people with healthy, straightforward nails, self-care is fine. But for patients with thickened, curved, fungal, or difficult nails — and for those with diabetes, poor circulation, reduced sensation, reduced mobility, or compromised eyesight — professional nail cutting by a podiatrist is the safer, more effective choice. We have specialist tools and the clinical knowledge to manage complex nails properly.
Yes — this is one of the most common reasons patients come to us. Severely thickened nails (onychogryphosis) cannot be managed with standard nail clippers. We use professional electric nail drills with specialist burrs to safely reduce and reshape even the most severely overgrown or distorted nails. The procedure is completely painless.
This depends on the individual. For most people with thick or difficult nails, every 6–10 weeks is appropriate. For diabetic patients, every 8–10 weeks is recommended. Patients with very rapidly growing nails may need more frequent appointments. Your podiatrist will advise on the ideal interval for you.
Absolutely — and in fact, regular professional nail care is especially important for patients with diabetes. Poorly cut nails or pressure from overgrown edges can create wounds that are slow to heal and at risk of infection. Our HCPC-registered podiatrists take all appropriate precautions and use sterile instruments.
Yes. We can reduce and tidy nails affected by fungal infection. If we identify signs of fungal nail infection during your appointment, we will discuss it with you and can arrange our dedicated in-clinic Fungal Nail Test (97% accurate) as a separate service if you would like to confirm the diagnosis and begin treatment.
Yes. We treat patients of all ages including children. We take a gentle, reassuring approach and make the experience as comfortable and positive as possible. Children with nails that are difficult to cut at home, or that are showing early signs of ingrowing, particularly benefit from professional nail care.
Nail cutting is routine maintenance — trimming, reducing and shaping the nail. Nail surgery is a minor surgical procedure to permanently remove part or all of a nail, typically for a severely ingrown toenail that has not responded to conservative treatment. Most patients only ever need routine nail care, not surgery.
Yes. We carefully assess and shape nails that are beginning to curve, pinch, or grow into the surrounding skin. We can also discuss conservative management options such as the PodoFix nail correction brace, which gently lifts and corrects an involuted nail over time without surgery.
Yes — and this is very common. Many patients book a routine nail cutting appointment and also have corns, calluses or hard skin treated at the same visit. We are happy to address all foot concerns in a single appointment.
A routine nail cutting appointment typically takes 30–45 minutes. If you also require nail reduction for thickened nails, or treatment for corns and calluses, the appointment may take slightly longer. We never rush.
Yes. We provide mobile podiatry home visits across Nottinghamshire for patients who are unable to travel to the clinic — including elderly patients, those with mobility issues, care home residents, and housebound patients. Visit our Home Visits page or call us to arrange.
Our clinic is based in Arnold, Nottingham. We see patients from across Nottinghamshire including Gedling, Carlton, Mapperley, Woodthorpe, Ravenshead, Hucknall, Daybrook, Bestwood, Calverton, Lambley, Burton Joyce, Lowdham, West Bridgford, Beeston, Long Eaton, Bingham, Radcliffe-on-Trent, Mansfield, Newark and surrounding areas.
NHS podiatry services are increasingly limited to high-risk patients such as those with active diabetic foot problems or following foot surgery. Routine nail cutting for most patients is now accessed privately. We offer affordable private appointments with no waiting list.
Podiatrist and chiropodist are two names for the same profession — both are HCPC-registered foot health specialists. At General Foot Care, all our clinicians are HCPC-registered and experienced in professional nail care.
